Morocco intensifies fight against drug trafficking

Close to thirty tons of cannabis has been seized in Morocco between January and April 2016, the National Office for the fight against drug addiction says.

The office further explained that the quantity of cannabis seized during the first three months of 2016 has recorded a decline of about 21 percent.

Investigations indicate that since 2010 about 10 thousand people have been arrested so far in relation to drug trafficking in Morocco which affects Algeria.

Among those arrested are 49 foreigners while 280 others are on the run.

Moroccan security officials have also announced the arrest of 58 traffickers specialised in cocaine trafficking.

A report from the International Narcotics Control Board which monitors the application of international agreements related to the control of drugs, classifies Morocco as a top cannabis producing country.

The report says huge quantities of cannabis are transported from Morocco to foreign countries.

The Agency has called on Morocco to pursue its commitment in the fight against the illicit cultivation of cannabis.
